The Lodge of Prudence in Halesworth, Suffolk, is making efforts to demystify Freemasonry by inviting the public to learn about their activities and charitable work. This move comes as part of a broader initiative to dispel misconceptions about the organization.

Peter Jacks, Worshipful Master of the Lodge, explained, "We are a charitable organization. We make donations and help out as many local charities as we possibly can." He added that while they maintain some private rituals, their primary focus is on community support.

Jon Berry, Immediate Past Master, emphasized the Masons' philanthropic impact: "Masonry is one of the biggest givers to charity in the world. Most of the air ambulances in the country would not be running without donations from the Masons."

The Lodge of Prudence, number 388, was established in 1827. It has 44 members and maintains a social aspect, including curry nights and quizzes. Steve Daine, the lodge secretary, described their ethos as helping people "communicate and be better members of society."

Despite their openness, the lodge faced vandalism following a recent public event, with graffiti suggesting misunderstandings about their nature. However, this incident has paradoxically increased local interest in the organization.

Freemasonry, with origins tracing back to medieval stonemasons, formed its Grand Lodge of England in 1717. The Halesworth lodge clarifies that they are not a religious organization and do not discuss religion or politics.

Mr. Berry concluded by inviting those interested to join, saying, "We would be happy to accept them and show them what we are all about."
