The Merritt Freemasons' Nicola Lodge No. 53 is actively seeking new members as they face a critical membership shortage. Currently operating with only six members, the lodge requires a minimum of seven Masons to function properly, though they're managing with help from Kamloops Lodges.
The organization has deep historical roots dating back to King Solomon's time, with the first recorded speculative Masons appearing around 1300 CE. In British Columbia, Freemason membership has drastically declined from 30,000 to just 4,000 members. Nicola Lodge No. 53, which has been present in the Nicola Valley for approximately 140 years, is one of the oldest lodges in the region.
The lodge is actively involved in charitable work, including:
- $1,000 donations to the food bank
- $3,000 in meals for the school board
- Three $1,000 bursaries
- $6,000 annual contribution to the Cancer Car Society
Their charitable work is funded through rental income from two buildings they own in Merritt. However, if the lodge closes due to low membership, these buildings would need to be sold.
William Ernest Starr, a Master Mason, emphasizes that Freemasonry welcomes men of all creeds who believe in a Supreme Being and wish to contribute to their community. The organization offers opportunities for personal growth, fellowship, and community service.
For those interested in joining, the process involves:
- Submitting an application with personal and family details
- Meeting with an investigating committee
- If approved, becoming an Entered Apprentice
Interested individuals can contact the lodge at (604)329-4815, (250)378-2773, or visit them at 2067 Quilchena Ave.
