Center Hill Masonic Lodge #77 continues its commitment to supporting local schools and students with a $200 donation to DeKalb County High School's Service Society Club. The funds will be used to support the upcoming Special Needs Prom, an annual event for students unable to attend the regular high school prom.
Lodge Master Don Adamson, Senior Warden Dustin Estes, Junior Warden Danny Pirtle, and Secretary Don Craze presented the check to Sara Young, DCHS Service Society sponsor and Math teacher, and Hope Carter, CDC Special Education Teacher.
The Special Needs Prom, now in its fifth year, provides an inclusive and enjoyable experience for students in CDC classes and other invited students. Held at DCHS, the event offers a more suitable environment for these students to enjoy a full prom experience, including dancing, a limo ride around town, a full meal, and a photo booth. Chris and Holly Moore will serve as the event's DJs.
"This is their opportunity to have their own prom and not miss out on that event," said Young. "We appreciate this donation from Center Hill Masonic Lodge, and we will use this money to provide a full meal for the special needs students."
The CDC Class also contributes to the event by fundraising through the sale of handmade car fresheners. "It's an industrial type lesson for the kids to help them learn money and job skills," explained Carter. The funds raised go towards renting the limo for the special needs students.
Service Society students play a crucial role in the event, helping to decorate and transform the cafeteria for the prom. "My service society kids say this prom is more fun than the regular prom. We always have so much fun and it's my favorite event of the whole school year," said Young.
The Special Needs Prom is a testament to the dedication of the DCHS staff and students in creating an inclusive and memorable experience for all students. With the support of organizations like Center Hill Masonic Lodge #77, this annual event continues to bring joy and happiness to the special needs students and their peer buddies.
