The Greenville Masonic Lodge No. 335, a fraternal organization with a hundred-year history in downtown Greenville, is relocating to the south of the city.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Monday at the site of their future premises at 2603 Canton Street, which will replace the old lodge at 2615 Stonewall Street.
The decision to move was prompted by structural issues with the old building, including a non-functioning elevator in the three-story structure.
The Greenville Lodge, chartered in 1871, had its previous building erected in 1925, which has now been sold.
The new location, situated just west of Wesley Street and behind Cavender’s Boot City, necessitated the removal of an empty residential building and several trees.
Preliminary work on the site has already commenced. The new lodge, boasting 30,000 square feet, is projected to be completed by the end of the year.
