The Masonic Hall on Orebank Road in Bowhill was the setting for a time-honored tradition last Saturday, as the Lodge St Fothad’s No 1059 convened for its annual Installation meeting.
This year, Brother William Miller was honored with his sixth installation as Master of the Lodge, an event witnessed by approximately 30 members.
The lodge has been a cornerstone of the ABCD villages—Auchterderran, Bowhill, Cardenden, and Dundonald—since 1909. However, it has experienced a decline in active membership following the closure of Bowhill Colliery and the subsequent demographic shifts in the area.
In his speech, Brother Miller emphasized the importance of the lodge’s members in ensuring its vitality. He urged current members to reignite the passion for Freemasonry in those who have drifted away and to extend a warm welcome to potential new members.
He expressed confidence that there are many in the vicinity of Bowhill who would embrace the lodge’s blend of formal ritual and social camaraderie if they were to reengage with it.
The lodge remains active in community events, having participated in the village fair and Bowhill Highland Games. Members are also preparing to partake in the upcoming village Service of Remembrance on November 12.
